Pictures)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest entry by DC Comics, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Beetle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carries a heavy weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the first live-action superhero movie starring, written by and directed by Latinos, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s supposed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinorebels.com\/2023\/08\/16\/supportlatinocreatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signal Latinos\u2019 cultural power<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here we are, finally getting that big-budget Hollywood blockbuster we\u2019ve been asking for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vS3_72Gb-bI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, to be clear, folks have been asking for it pretty directly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/gina-rodriguez-points-out-whats-still-missing-from-superhero-movies_n_59764bbae4b0c95f375d9d24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since before 2018,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the year <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Panther<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> came out and proved that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/en-us\/2022\/11\/11191045\/wakanda-forever-namor-indigenous-latine-representation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">POC-led and created<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fare translates into big bucks for studios.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, of course, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Beetle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> premiered during <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinorebels.com\/2023\/07\/24\/latinaactorsagstrike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the double SAG-AFTRA\/WGA strike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning the talented Latino folks on camera &#8212;including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinorebels.com\/2022\/09\/15\/cobraikaimexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xolo Maridue\u00f1a<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/latinamedia.co\/brazilian-representation-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruna Marquezine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsugar.com\/entertainment\/hocus-pocus-2-brujeria-48975099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belissa Escobedo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/latinamedia.co\/what-we-do-in-the-shadows-s4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvey Guill\u00e9n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinorebels.com\/2023\/02\/14\/georgelopezralphbarbosa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">George Lopez<\/span><\/a>&#8212;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0couldn\u2019t promote it. So while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Beetle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was able to knock <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinorebels.com\/2023\/08\/10\/blackbarbie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbie<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> off the top spot, it had to do so without its charming cast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The press is ranging between calling its economic performance &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/film\/box-office\/box-office-blue-beetle-stumbles-opening-weekend-barbie-1235700676\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the softest starts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the history of the DC Cinematic Universe&#8221; to &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/20\/business\/media\/strays-blue-beetle-box-office.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">typical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With those obstacles, can this be the film that finally changes the narrative in Hollywood about Latinos\u2019 bankability?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That remains unclear. But maybe instead of putting all that weight on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Beetle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we should just enjoy it for what it is&#8212;a mostly fun superhero flick (when we\u2019ve had a million of them) distinguishing itself with its Latino texture and its celebration of family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Beetle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a typical origin story, the type we\u2019ve become accustomed to from DC Comics and its competitors. There\u2019s both good and bad in that. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Beetle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we meet a colorful cast of characters and explore a compelling world in the fictional <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/arts-entertainment\/blue-beetle-dumped-el-paso-for-palmera-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palmera City<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The film hits the beats of humble beginnings, powerful transformations and the temptations of new-found powers well, thanks to Maridue\u00f1a and his on-screen family\u2019s charm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also features many of the annoying bits of such movies as well. It\u2019s overly long &#8212;at two-plus hours&#8212; instead of a more appropriate 90 minutes. And while Palmera City may be bright and colorful during the day, we get plenty of hard-to-distinguish night scenes, falling into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23661749\/why-movies-look-dark-cinematography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hollywood\u2019s current dark-gray-on-black aesthetic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is annoying, to say the least.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What begins to distinguish <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Beetle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is its Mexican American texture. Who knew it would be such a joy to hear &#8220;<em>pendejo<\/em>&#8221; so many times at the multiplex&#8212;and in all of its various meanings too?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a scene where Jaime sets off to look for a new job, and what seems like the typical ambitious-boy-starring-up-at-big-city-sky-scrappers scene becomes something much funnier and more interesting when director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/film\/features\/blue-beetle-director-angel-manuel-soto-latinos-hollywood-strike-1235685134\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c1ngel Manuel Soto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reveals the rest of the Reyes family behind Jaime. When Nana (Adriana Barraza) pulls Jaime in to give him a blessing, I couldn\u2019t stop cackling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are all sorts of nods like these to Chicano culture, from the way the Reyeses decorate their house to what they watch on TV to even their sleeping arrangements. And while the film is firmly rooted in this particular family, it also gives an expansive definition of Latinidad, showing us Latinx characters of various backgrounds. I\u2019m talking different nationalities, body types, socio-economic statuses, education levels, immigration statuses, political outlooks, and on it goes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing that diversity depicted within our community is refreshing and may go against some of the &#8220;this doesn\u2019t reflect my experience&#8221; sentiment that Latinos seem to get stuck in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What the film does best is celebrate family. For so long, superheroes have been orphans or lone wolfs, forged by their isolation. Not so with Jaime Reyes, and that&#8217;s not just implied but explicit in the film. Jaime and his fight partner trade lines about whether loving one&#8217;s family is a strength or weakness&#8212;and only the bad guys think it\u2019s a weakness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while Jaime\u2019s love interest, Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), may come from all sorts of privilege, she\u2019s right to point out the power of coming from a loving family. It may not get Jaime out of poverty or even keep all of the Reyeses safe, but it means at least as much as Jenny\u2019s millions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, there\u2019s the fact that everyone takes turns saving each other in the film. Jaime literally would not succeed without his family, and each one of his family members, including most memorably that blessing-giving abuela, is crucial to the success of his quest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a beautiful vision, one celebrating and spotlighting all of the ways Latino families show up for each member. And that focus on our families, that ability to lessen the individualism of even a super-powered superhero, well, that makes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Beetle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> different, more than the typical origin film we\u2019ve come to expect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/msnbc-opinion\/blue-beetle-superhero-movie-latinos-need-see-rcna100547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marks a change<\/a>, and a very welcome one at that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><i><strong>Cristina Escobar<\/strong>\u00a0is the entertainment reporter for Latino Rebels.
